Study Abroad - Ireland

Renowned for friendliness, this safe, English speaking country offers warm welcome to students from all over the world in this century; there has been tremendous growth in the number of international students choosing Ireland to fulfill their potential. Part of the EU family of nations and cultures and of the increasingly integrated European Education Area, most universities run a semester based system and modularization has been introduced in the majority of colleges to allow greater flexibility for students.
Ireland's higher education system provides a range of options which include universities, institutes of technology as well as various other specialized colleges, which are all referred to as third level education institutions. Private schools primarily offer business and other professional programs. About nine percent of Ireland's higher education enrollment in recent years has been made up of non-Irish citizens. Many of these students choose to study in the capital of Dublin where there are numerous schools including the oldest in the country – University of Dublin, Trinity College, which was founded in 1592. Irish qualifications are recognized for excellence world-wide. Students can choose from an extensive range of courses to meet their needs in highly respected business schools, centers of scientific and technology excellence as well as renowned language, humanities and arts faculties. Ireland's graduates are innovators in their fields, leaders in their communities and ambassadors for excellence all around the world. Qualifications earned and connections made in Ireland deliver a passport to success. Companies who require a skilled, educated and highly capable workforce to drive their success choose to locate in Ireland. Ireland has welcomed Google, Face book, Pfizer, Apple, Intel to name just a few — all of whom chose Ireland as their European base.
International students are eligible to attend any of Ireland's higher education schools as long as they have strong enough results on either Ireland's Leaving Certification Exam or an acceptable equivalent in their home country. The highest caliber schools require that students have already completed two years of university level education elsewhere with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Tuition fees for non-EU international students are high compared with other European countries. They vary between schools but have been averaging about 10,000 to 15,000 Euros for many undergraduate programs with programs in medicine and engineering and graduate studies running somewhat higher. The academic year typically runs from September to June and is divided into either two or three semesters with holidays in December (Christmas) and April (Easter).

General Information
Ireland is a beautiful island, combining contemporary modern cosmopolitan cities with beautiful, un-spoilt countryside, cityscapes steeped in history and a rich natural habitat.
Ireland is dynamic, lively, modern country with a young population and a successful, technologically orientated economy but it remains a country where music, conversation, culture, traditions, time to relax, listen and make friends ... matter.
Agricultural lowlands make up most of the interior, which is broken in places by low hills and includes considerable areas of bogs and lakes. There are coastal mountains to the west, rising to over 1000m in places. Nearly a third of the population lives in Dublin.
Its people have always been associated with a love of music and storytelling. Often referred to as the land of saints and scholars, the country is the birthplace of many famous English-language writers, such as Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, Wilde and Shaw. Ireland is home to internationally known rock bands and singers such as U2, The Corrs and Sinéad O'Connor.
The climate of Ireland can be summed up as being mild, moist and changeable with abundant rainfall and a lack of temperature extremes.
